June Book Club: The Word of a Humble God

Back by popular demand, biblical scholar Karen R. Keen is facilitating a three-week book club in June! The Word of a Humble God takes a deep, yet accessible dive into the origins of the Bible, the history of Christian interpretation, and what it all means for today.

The book club is free to anyone who wants to join in the discussion. The only requirements are a commitment to read the assigned chapters ahead of time and show up with your questions and insights. All three sessions will take place through a live video call. Check out additional details below, including how to register.

TOPIC:
Where did the Bible come from? Who wrote it? How do we best interpret it? These are the core questions explored in this book club. Scripture is a rich source of wisdom and truth for the spiritual life. But a lack of understanding about its origins and use in Christian history can prevent us from getting the most out of it. Among other things, we will discuss the oldest surviving biblical manuscripts, theories of divine inspiration, as well as the various methods of interpretation Christians have used throughout history, from antiquity to the present. Most of all, we will ponder how the making of the Bible reveals the very character of God.

WHEN:
June 11, 18, and 25, 2026
Thursday evenings at 7:30pm CENTRAL TIME (5:30pm Pacific / 8:30pm Eastern)

WHERE:

WHAT PEOPLE ARE SAYING:

“Karen Keen’s The Word of a Humble God: The Origins, Inspiration, and Interpretation of Scripture is perhaps the best comprehensive and accessible introduction to the Bible available today” – Dr. Michael Graves, Wheaton College

“She offers us something more than a historical overview. She makes a striking theological proposal: that God’s choice to speak through these humanly written, edited, and transmitted scriptures is a clue about God’s humility” – Dr. Richard B. Hays, Duke University

“Her proposal for a ‘Divine Humility View’ of Scripture is brilliant in that it provides the building blocks for that which is desperately needed in our time—a Christian theology of difference.” – Dr. Dan Collison, minister and civic leader
